Thinking of getting a puppy?

Making the decision to bring a puppy into your home is a big one. It’s easy to be carried along on a wave of anticipation so it can help to discuss your decision with someone who will help you with some of the practical considerations that may be overlooked in all the excitement. Equally relevant for experienced and first time dog owners.

As a Puppy School tutor Jacki has plenty of experience with puppies and the types of questions that arise so can help ensure you all get off to the best possible start.

There are two types of appointment, one will help you prepare for the new arrival and the other will help you with the settling in process.

You may choose either or both appointments (the second will be discounted if you choose both with a further discount if you have booked and paid for your place on one of our Puppy School classes. Whenever possible, it is useful if all the resident family are able to be present.

Preparation for bringing puppy home

This appointment will last up to 90 minutes and the discussion will include choosing a puppy that is compatible with your lifestyle, finding a puppy, questions to ask when choosing a puppy from the litter, special considerations if you are thinking of getting two puppies or have another dog in the home, toilet training, puppy’s first night, essential equipment (and what not to buy!) e.g. choice of collar, lead, bed, crate etc.

The appointment will be followed up with some written notes to remind you of everything we covered: cost of appointment and follow up notes: £45

Early days in the new home

This appointment will last up to 90 minutes and should ideally take place during the puppy’s first week in your home, the earlier the better, especially if you haven’t taken the Preparation appointment.

The discussion will include toilet training (discuss progress if pre-puppy appointment booked), leaving puppy home alone (discuss progress if pre-puppy appointment booked), responsible dog ownership (including legal obligations), importance of training and socialisation (what can be done before puppy starts classes), how to play with different toys for different reasons, play biting/mouthing, creating a ‘dog-cabulary’ to ensure successful communication with the puppy.
